20 Years Gone: Remembering Widespread Panic's Michael Houser

Solid write up about the late, great Michael Houser. 20 years to the day, and Panic starts a run at the Fox tonight. Best believe they are going to put out a helluva tribute to Mikey. Wish I was going tonight, but I'll be there Friday.
Anyone have any memories of shows while Mike was still with us? Never got to see him unfortunately as I was only 6 when he passed.

Mikey is still with us, embedded permanently in the music, endlessly pulsing in the hearts of his bandmates, and buried deep in the soul of the Home Team faithful. His guitar lead did linger, every solo he took during his too brief time with us, and it continues to linger, and ain’t that grand?
quote:
Many people refer to Widespread as a “six-headed monster” but really it was just one head, one heart, one soul, one spine, a quartet of limbs, and a dark, warm blood running through it all. Houser was the central nervous system, synapses firing pulses of electricity with every thought, every movement, every sound… the six-headed monster would still be the same monster without one of its heads, but this monster is a different beast without Mikey.
Of course, there is one more family, the fans, those of us who “got it,” who knew the code and swore by its gospel. Whether we knew Michael Houser or not, we certainly felt like we did: we made room for him in our lives and in our hearts and now that space is a little bit emptier.
The highest compliment I feel I can give to a person is “I’m better to have known you.” Michael Houser: I am better to have known you.

RIP Mikey
Seems like it was so long ago and like it was just yesterday. The band has never been the same.

You didn't realize how much of their sound was him until after he died.

The years just after and before Herring we’re pretty bad. That tone from Houser is so unique and still missing.
Saw someone say Jimmy has now been in the band as long as Houser was.
Crazy to think

I saw WSP many times at Oak Mountain with Houser...he had a very unique sound. Not so much a gunslinger type guitarist, but his guitar sound fit their music perfectly.
Every time I saw him live he was sitting down while playing.
One of the best concerts I attended was when they played at Mud Island Amphitheater in Memphis...Blues legend R.L. Burside opened. Good times !
RIP Mikey !

Damn, they always bring the heat at the Fox.
I only caught one show there way back in the day (12/30/98), wish I was around for this run.
Love Mikey, can't believe it has been 20 years already.

RIP Mikey. Kinda wish the guys had moved on under a different name after he passed. Herring must get paid by the note, that barren empty noodling doesn't compare to the soul Mikey brought to the stage.

I don't really listen to WP these days, but man I put some miles on a few different vehicles back then.
Last time I saw Mike was Bonnaroo 2002 and what a great experience and show to say goodbye to. Best show I ever saw was Fox Theater St Louis 2001 (I think). Magical night.
These days when I listen to Houser it feels like an old friend I haven't seen in a long time. Or maybe it's like an old shoe, that fits just right. Many memories. Hard to believe it's been 20 years.
RIP Mikey

Met him in 99’ after Red Rocks show. So chill and polite to talk after the show while I’m sure he was worn out. Got married on the day he passed. 98-02 with 4/21/02 being my last Mikey show. Those years were absolutely perfect. I still go and enjoy thinking about his sound, it was so different to me, I was hooked. The Nola runs I was able to go to in 99 and 00’ were out of this world. Never left the venue for those years. Those are probably my favorite shows but I don’t know….there were so many. Each one was the best
