Daily #MoffettWatch. I think I'm starting to look forward to Moffett appearances more than Skenes starts at this point. I've got depositions in 3 hours but all I care about rn is breaking down one inning of a 19 year old's summer league relief appearance

Threw 1 inning last night. 8th inning, his team leading 5-2. 1 hit, 2 strikeouts, no walks, no runs.

First batter: 0-2 count, reaching infield single on a really good breaking ball. Batter just stuck the bat out and chopped one over Moffett's head. Shortstop couldn't make the play (would have been a very tough play)

Second batter: 1-0 lineout to center. One of the better swings on moffett all summer.

Third batter: 2-2 Strikeout swinging on high heat. Threw 2 breaking balls that were fouled off. Good movement but I don't think he's got the best command of the pitch. Some were hung and some were in the dirt.

Fourth batter: 0-2 strikout. Blew a fastball by him on the outer third.

Sat mid 90s, threw 4 breaking balls (2 Balls). Broadcaster specifically mentioned Moffett has both a 4 seam and a 2 seam fast ball, so maybe he is throwing two separate fast balls intentionally. His 2 seam tends to be the faster of the two. He's now up to 8 and 2/3 innings on the season with 15 strikeouts. Has allowed 5 earned on 5 hits and 6 walks, but as I've mentioned in my previous posts, I disagree with the official scorer on 3 of those earned runs and 2 of those hits.

Interesting that his 2 seam is harder than his 4 seam. Usually it is the other way around.

That tells me the 4 seam is the newer pitch. Be curious to see if he gets a few ticks up in velo on the pitch come springtime as he continues to develop and work on the pitch.

I wonder if the broadcaster got that backwards. a lot of pitchers throw both fastballs, but the 4-seam tends to be the faster, flatter pitch because of the backspin (and sometimes appears to be rising). if Moffett's 2-seam is indeed faster, he must use a non-conventional grip. in a traditional sense, most P throw the 4-seam for speed and the 2-seam for movement.
