Cantu's Tamales
229 Capitol st.
Denham Springs, La.
The lady that makes them has the old muffoledo's recipe...she is using a little too much mesa for me but the flavor is muffs. For all you old timers out there and for sure you old Istrouma Greasers. It's just a small carry out but the Tamales are the closest thing to the old Muffs.

He grilled a bone-in pork loin and had some Jim Beam sauce he invented that was out of this world. He also mentioned some gumbo recipe that he would make some other time

Yes, I must agree best ones I had in a long time. After reading your post,I took a drive.
As a kid I remember when muffs were on Plank Rd, then Foster, and lastly N Blvd. Fully packed and tasty, they did'nt break up. Not only were they the closest to muffs, they might even be better.
Thanks

Had a friend that used to work at Muffaletto's Tamales back in the day. You wouldn't like to know what's in them, as told to me by the man that made the mix in clean large plastic garbage drums in back while I watched him, he always said "Hearts, Parts, Elbows, and @ssholes!"
I ate them anyways, but they were greasy and had a tad much masa..then again were free to me.
The ones from the lady in Maurice or Opelousas, or around there, are also great.
I grab some Ivy's Pride for a fix from time to time.
Berryhill Tamales in H-Town do a great spinach tamale.
And if ever in Las Vegas, go to Dona Maria's Tamales..unreal!

If muffs has too much masa then what do you think about Ivy's?

I like all types of tamales, including the late, great Muff's. Thanks for the heads-up.
One of my other favs was Manuel's in N.O., now gone thanks to Katrina. Some similar ones to Manuel's are produced at Guillory's, off of Airline in Metry. (3708 Derbigny St, Metairie, LA).

Tim, Ivy's Pride is ridiculously all-masa.
Tclsu, definitely go to Dona Maria's(on the Strip near Stratosphere) on your next trip to Viva.

I don't think there is a specific Zwolle Tamale. They have the Tamale Festival every year. I'm up there quite a bit and just south of Zwolle has a store and the owner (Maria) makes some damn good tamales.

got some cantu's for the game and they were even better than the first (less masa)...these may be the best ever since muffs.

I'm going to have to take a drive to Denham real soon. Too bad I live in the opposite direction.

Smiley Anders had something in the paper today about Cantu's Hot Tamales, They were sold out within 30 minutes of opening today. Had to wait couple of hours for another batch to cook. Must be some tamale eating people around.

Shoot! I was thinking about driving out there tomorrow, but will put it off now.
On another message board (neworleans.com) someone posted that Muff's got their recipe from "Old Man Cantu" - for the post go to LINK
Edited to add - just realized it was the same "sherio" who posted above on THIS thread!
Where'd you get the info Sherio? Fascinating story.
