GSP vs Labrador (update pg. 3 - got a Drahthaar)

Been waiting for a specific lab litter around January-March. Coworker has a GSP from a good breeder and bloodline with a litter on potentially coming soon. Been doing some research and think I’ve convinced myself I want a liver/brown whatever GSP.
Currently have a 7 year old lab that duck hunted until I stopped a few years ago.
Really wanting a house dog that would pick up on blood trailing/retrieving. Tell me what I’m not seeing

Liver and roan or brown? Either way, GSP’s are not what I would consider a house dog by any means. I have two and a yellow lab puppy. While both of my GSP’s are family dogs that I occasionally run for dove hunting, they have free reign over 50 acres and spend the day doing who knows what all over the property. If you’re unable to find an outlet for their limitless energy and a way to stimulate them mentally, they’ll drive you crazy acting out because of boredom.

I think liver and roan?
When I say house dog I don’t mean cooped up 24/7. I have a large backyard and will be training for retrieving like I did my lab. Energy will be utilized

Liver and roan is what I have. That classic GSP look. They’re amazing animals and fantastic family dogs if you can find an outlet for their energy levels. Both of mine are great with my kids, all under the age of 6.

A nephew has a well trained GSP and he hunts a lot. One problem…it doesn’t tolerate cold very well. Fortunately, we don’t often have cold weather. But during a good freeze the GSP gets cold with his thin skin and short hair. My lab is swimming and playing in th water with ice on the edge of the pond.

I have a 5 month old GSP. I have never had so many compliments on him. He has been a great dog so far. He gets plenty of exercise. We have a pond and he has been pointing at fish and swimming across it. As you already know, they need activity to wear them out mentally and physically. He is about to head to a trainer for 2 months. I plan on using him for deer shed and recovery, possibly some dove. I have been working with a little and he is very intelligent.
He has been great with my two kids. Just my 2 cents

Hear me out.
Wirehaired Pointing Griffon.
Same look as a GWP. Doesn't shed near as much as a lab. Has great game drive without being a psychopath. Great family dog (Gets along with my 1 year old like a champ). Extremely trainable. Mine will trail, retrieve (W/ hand signals), and point.
I'll never get a different breed.
*Edit: Just saw someone mention cold tolerance - they love it. Hunted ND in 10 degree weather and he didn't check up once.

If you want a similar dog with a little longer coat, look at a GWP or Drahthaar. Unfortunately, I don't hunt as much as I would like anymore, but mine is still trained and has always done great whenever we've had time to get out the house. He's crazy though, but extremely loyal and sweet to people.

Agree except for this

With stimulation and training they are excellent house dogs.
We have one and foster for GSP Rescues, and they are sweet loving affectionate workers, as long as they can get exercise.

Exercise is key. I can’t say it enough. Mine is so much better behaved if I give him some time in the evenings to run it out. If I’m tired or too lazy to play with him, he’s aggravating as all hell in the evening.

The GSP will have a gear a Lab doesn't even know exists.
One big plus for the GSP is that they aren't constantly slobbering all over you.

1've had two gwp 's and two gsp's- gwps are better dogs but are relentless be prepared to work them almost every day both are great family dogs my last gwp protected my yard killing almost one coon per month although friendly to other dogs ,kids etc that said gsps are a little calmer and my two also swam in pond when ice around edges

You wont want that GSP in the house. Highly active and will act out if they don't have an outlet for all of that energy

Where does one find a GWP or Drahtaar?
Any recommended breeders?

That link has all the info you'll ever need. Keep in mind that all DDs are GWPs, but not all GWPs are DDs. So if you just want a GWP, ignore that website and look elsewhere for breeder info.

Of your choices, stick with a lab. It sounds, crazy but a true bird dog like a pointer, setter or GSP will run circles around a lab.
I've been dog sitting an English Setter this summer for a buddy. We tried to artificially inseminate her in April to an old stud, but it did not take. I didn't send her back to the kennel though.
I've always been a big duck/goose hunter, but have recently been enjoying dove, wood cock and quail more as I've gotten a little older and not as mad at the ducks.
I'm in love with this damn dog... Granted, I work with her in the backyard every afternoon, and run her arse off on a 60 acre tract my mom lives on when I go visit her a time or two each week.
We have her lined up to breed a different field champion stud this fall for Christmas puppies.

If the OP plans to keep his GSP active, it won't be an issue having the pup in the house.
I have a 1.5 year old female and she sleeps in her kennel in the laundry room perfectly every night. I do have a young, active family so we keep her busy.
She is also bad arse with the birds; loves quail, chukar, pheasant, doves, etc. She's also pretty fond of the squirrels and rabbits as well.
The greatest family dog EVER.

I’ve got a GSP that looks similar to a Bluetick coonhound in color. Also have a Griffon. I quail hunt a lot with them. Both are females. Mine are very chilled out in the house.
My buddy has 3 male GSP that he keeps in a kennel and they are hell on wheels. The have one gear and it’s point birds.
