The media was still biased back then, but they hadn't fallen into advocacy journalism. They asked tough questions of both sides and held those on their side of the political spectrum to a high standard (re: the Biden bits).
Today, much of the journalism surrounding politics is advocating for or against someone or something. For a glaring example, all we have to do is look to the disparity in styles and levels of coverage between Trump-Russia collusion and the Hunter Biden Laptop (and its contents).

Excellent point. Media has always been slanted but at least back then there remained a semblance of overall pride in the profession first and a desire to try and find facts.
Today’s media only cares about supporting The Narrative - facts be damned. They are professional propagandists.
