You'd always want to be on the green rather than off and maybe you are an old man that can't generate spin or needs to hit a 7 iron from 130, but no.

That’s the point. You wouldn’t be on the green with a rangefinder. 99% of golfers are amateurs and would drastically benefit from having a GPS instead of a rangefinder. Modern technology allows for extremely accurate GPS signals.
Maybe you’re a pro and can put the ball exactly where you want. But, for the most of us, including Tiger Woods currently, cannot.
