Why the negativity? My wife and I enjoyed the opening ceremony and the event we went to. Yeah, there were a few glitches at the opening ceremony, but it was fun. We didn't specifically go to Birmingham for the games and ended up staying a couple of extra days to go to an event. People that post about Birmingham either love it or seem to make it their mission to speak negatively about it. As I stated in my earlier post, the city looked great and there appeared to be a lot of visitors in the downtown area from what we saw.
If you look at the numbers, the metro area is about 1.2 million people. The City of Birmingham has only 200,000 of those people or 17% of the metro population. Hoover has about 100,000 or 8% of the population. Do you get just as angry and wish for things to fail that the City of Hoover does? How about Trussville, Homewood and Mountain Brook, do you root for them to fail too? Are you that miserable living in the area? If you don't live in the city limits of Birmingham, don't worry about what the city with 17% of the metro population chooses to do. Sit home and be miserable if you like or enjoy the fact that you have the opportunity to see some events and meet people from all over the world visiting the city.
I remember reading the same type of negativity when George Barber was building the Barber Motorsports Park and Museum, when the Sloss Furnace National Landmark was being restored, when Protective Stadium was being built, etc. Definitely no shortage of miserable people hoping to see things fail.

The biggest negativity came over a decade ago when they decided to build the Barons a stadium downtown along with Railroad Park. There has been so much progress for this city the last 10 years and the World Games will be another positive when it's all said and done.

Gotta admit, the “bullet dodging” competition this afternoon was really entertaining. Thought the local athletes would have done a little better though. LINK

Sound like you need to move to a much safer city so you will be less miserable. Maybe you should try Baton Rouge where I live or Atlanta where I went to college. Both of those cities have zero crime.

That’s parkour like street skateboarding. Looks stupid… I think of it more like it should be going from point A to point B with flips when necessary

I liked the parkour racing on the second half of that video more than the free style event at the beginning of the video.
The Sumo was well attended. The women's heavy weight division championship was probably never in doubt.

Oh, I'm not opposed to crime per se, I just wish we could have winged a couple of the hipsters watching the break dancing instead of a guy trying to make an honest living down on the corner.
But I guess the cops can't be everywhere..

Went to kickboxing (Boutwell) and beach handball (Sloss) today. Enjoyed both. Saw the mens and womens world champs in handball. Current mens team went down in a 9 shot shootout. Our women loss to Germany. Sat ringside at kickboxing.
Good stuff. Trying to rally for billiards tonight but it ain’t looking good.

Team USA lost to Germany in pool play in ultimate frisbee. Germany is looking like a really good team even though they were seeded last.
USA V Canada to see who progresses from that pool.
Go Nate Goff, #11

Surprised Birmingham metro doesn’t land a real PGA tournament

Shoal Creek has hosted two PGA Championships.
Probably blackballed and never will again though.

I think Birmingham would crush a PGA event and of the major spots, it’s the most likely. However, there are a few things holding us back. First, another tour stop would have to change venues and that’s tough to do. Even if there’s a window of opportunity, is there a better option out there we are competing against? The tour also tries to avoid the Deep South as much as it can during the summer months because of the obvious heat issues…..so the window gets smaller. (That might be BS but that’s at least someone who lives in that world told me.)
So who hosts it? I think Shoal is the obvious choice but some say Birmingham Country Club is a better fit. The problem there is would they be willing to turn the East course into a parking/staging area for three months a year? Could Mountain Brook even handle that kind of traffic?
Would love to see one here because Birmingham is a big golf town and it would be well attended. The Regions is a glorified exhibition and we can certainly do better. What Birmingham desperately needs is a big time national corporation (like FedEx in Memphis) to be HQ’d here that draws events because of sponsorship dollars.
