A coach who “doesn’t care about defense” doesn’t start a .200 hitter at catcher, for his defense.
A coach who “doesn’t care about defense” doesn’t try several different MIF combos to try and shake out the best options.
A coach who “doesn’t care about defense” doesn’t try Berry at multiple spots before settling on the one that he’s most comfortable in.

Yeah, id say a more accurate description would be “he overlooked the defense”.
Id be curious what they did in practice and how it was developed in the offseason.
I know they worked those kids to the bone to fix it in season, and i think it got alot better towards the end. I think it progressed because johnson did an about face mid season to get them in gear defensively. But you could see it looked bad early in the season

Coaching fundamentals is a proactive exercise, not a reactive one.
