It’s real simple baw. If you don’t have Christ in your life- your vessel is empty. An empty vessel may be filled with many things.

Matthew 12:43-45 talks about something similar.
An evil spirit is cast out of a man, but nothing is brought in to fill out the empty space. So the spirit comes back and sees things cleaned out, and brings in seven spirits worse than he is, making things worse than before.
So simply cleaning up one's act, though commendable and beneficial in the short term, isn't enough. Your statement is spot on.
