I posted this on the OT. It got killed. So maybe I can post it here?

Has anybody ever traveled/lived in/knew somebody who lived in Uruguay?
My grandfather is a libertarian type and I remember him telling me about this country a few years ago. Basically back in the day it was like the Switzerland of Latin America. Economically free, socially free, doesn’t intervene in foreign affairs.
He says it is basically like a quarter or third the size of Texas with only 3 million people and almost half of those people live in the capitol. The rest is basically ranch land similar to Texas. It is also on the coast and the people are very laid back and chill. It is not corrupt or dangerous. We even have somebody in our family (maybe one of his uncles) that moved there when either FDR or LBJ implemented some socialist policies (I think it was FDR?)
It sounds like a utopia to be honest. I am sure things have changed but it can’t be worse than america can it?

Think it was due to the one word thread title. I went and looked and saw the usual “reply guy” bs replies that have helped kill the once great OT Lounge
From what i know about it, it’s a place where people seem to be of good mental health and it’s pretty safe compared to some of its neighboring countries. Has good infrastructure and apparently it’s a big retirement destination. I understand it’s pretty liberal too so that might throw a few baws for a loop but it does seem like an interesting culture and country. I’ve eaten at a Uruguayan restaurant before and it was similar food to Argentina.
Im a soccer fan and the majority of Uruguayan stars who make it big are proud of their home.

I've heard from various people that it is a cool place, more european than latin american, but I have never been. Funny enough, my wife mentioned a couple of days ago we should go to Uruguay to check it out. They are fairly liberal with national healthcare, free education through college, legal marijuana and gay marriage.

Their largest city and capital, Montevideo, is a short ferry ride from Buenos Aires. Very easy to spend a day there if already visiting Argentina.
But to answer OP’s question, no, it’s not better than America in any sense of comparison.

I was considering it for 2023 but I have been hitting South America pretty hard lately and decided to take a break.
I want to go there and hunt perdiz.

It is not a utopia. Their Switzerland like position is no longer. There are street gangs and crime. It’s not exactly prosperous, with some pockets of poverty. It is pretty liberal. Although there is plenty of ranch and hunting, I would not draw a comparison to Texas. As with most South American countries, there is corruption and abuse of public funds and assets. They suffer along with Argentina when financial crises hit, which is about every six weeks.
I’m not saying don’t go, just don’t expect paradise.

I think OP is talking about moving there. Not traveling. Feels like a “USA is horrible thread”

That's an entirely different discussion. One of those "no matter how bad the Bernie Bros and Biden Bros are, we won the lottery being born in the USA" moments.
I've traveled lots down there. Love Buenos Aires. Love the people. Would consider a vacation home there. But the place is totally and irreversibly f***ed up. Crime, poverty, corruption... It is not Texas. It is Louisiana times 1000.
Also, Urugay is tiny and so is Montevideo. If you really want to live there, consider Buenos Aires. BA is bigger, more flights to USA, more resources, public transit, restaurants, etc... It's like comparing New York City to Buffalo.
In either location, plan on a serious downgrade for expectations. Infrastructure is conceptually fifty years behind. Services don't happen nearly as promptly or regularly. We are very fortunate in the US.

Pretty sure it’s the least corrupt Latin American country. There is plenty of corruption in the Us too, as I’m sure we all know

Uruguay being tiny is why I like it partly. I just want to be left alone. For this reason I wouldn’t move there until I’m in my 30s or 40s

I can think of better options to be left alone. If you are set on South America, you want the Patagonia in southern Argentina.
Read some Chatwin, you will be inspired by how quiet Patagonia can be. Also know that decent Spanish is required, they do not do English well that far out in the sticks.
I took both of these from the train across patagonia. It's very desolate. I'm not sure what one does to feed one's self or pay the rent, but it sure is quiet.
On a slightly more North American note, I'd suggest eastern Washington or Montana. They speak english and have some good due process laws, and it's also very quiet and private north of Spokane. Plus if you ever want to go home or visit family you're looking at $500, not $2500. Also far norther California, few hours north of Sacramento. It's very quiet up there and you can get some good jobs contracting for PG&E that will amply feed you. But you could get a cabin deep in a river canyon and not be bothered.
