"move somewhere less expensive"
Yeah, thinking back to SC, I think of Florence. Town of like 35,000 about halfway between Columbia and Myrtle Beach. It has a couple daily AA flights into Charlotte. That air availability would be very important to me if I lived there.

It's little over an hour drive to Columbia from Florence. Ithaca is only an hour drive from Syracuse. Most people only fly a couple times a year if that. So moving to somewhere less expensive can easily make sense to them if they only have to make an hour drive a couple times a year to catch a flight.
Wife and I never fly out of Columbia. We always drive to Charlotte. Cheaper flights, and cheaper parking.

Because God forbid you would have to make that 2 hour, or less, drive

Myrtle Beach and Columbia are 1.5 hours or less to Florence. MYR is looking to expand again after recently doubling in size. Would not be surprised to see AA eventually cut Florence out because of this.
