Energy Efficiency: Windows/Doors or Insulation

I recently had my AC unit replaced. The original one made it 15 years.
Anyway, the house was built in the 80’s. We still have the original single pane windows. The insulation in the attic is very thin and there is no radiant heat barrier.
What is the best bang for the buck as far as energy efficiency? Replacing the windows and doors or insulating the attic?

A simple vinyl replacement should have a Low E / argon glass. That would certainly help.
How good is the attic ventilation? Have you cleansed out your intake vents?

My house is similar and have done both within the past few years. The windows helped but the insulation seemed to help more. The windows cost about $12,000 and the insulation was $3,000. So bang for the buck, for me, definitely insulation.

Attic Insulation window film on the windows

The most important thing about energy efficiency in a house is air infiltration. So a cheap window that does not leak air is more valuable than 6" thick insulation in your walls.
Attack any air flow issues first.
Outlets, electrical switches, light fixtures, A/C registers, fireplace chimneys, etc.
Plenty of cheap fixes that will also go a long way to making a difference.
