If you only have one customer, it looks more like an employee than a babysitter who has several different clients.

Independent contractors usually have more than one client.

It is not the end of the world. OP could file a return for her, pay the taxes, and help her open a Roth IRA.

This is exactly what I was thinking. It would more than make up for the niece's troubles and would get her off to a great start to investing.
