247: LSU QB competition among SEC biggest questions in 2022

Every college program has questions entering a season but in a situation like LSU, welcoming a new coach, 15 transfers and 15 freshmen to the roster, there aren’t many questions that are overlooked.
The most important one facing this Tigers group is behind center and which of the three quarterbacks firmly in that competition can best get the job done. In a recent article, the 247Sports national desk posed the 10 biggest questions in the SEC heading into 2022 and unsurprisingly the Tigers quarterback competition was right in the middle of the discussion.
“LSU exited spring practice ahead of coach Brian Kelly's first season with its quarterback competition tighter than ever, similar to Texas A&M's situation in the SEC West with an incumbent, transfer option and a third player in the mix. The face of the LSU offense for the 2022 season comes down to Myles Brennan, Jayden Daniels or Garrett Nussmeier and Kelly's choice will likely determine this team's overall worth. Kelly said after LSU's spring game he has no interest in playing two quarterbacks after doing so once before at Notre Dame and believes the position will work itself out during fall camp.”

Everyone has been quick to dismiss Brennan. I would bet that Brennan takes the first snap in NOLA and depending on how he plays stays in or is replaced.
Probably have a special package/group of plays designed for Jayden due to his speed, but otherwise he looked the worst of the three in the spring.

For the first time in a long time, I actually trust our head coach to make the right decision when determining a starting QB.

O did about as well as could be expected with QB, and like it or not, his teams were more effective at that position than LSU has been in a long time.

I’m not being an arse or anything, but outside of getting Burrow to LSU, what makes you say that? He inherited Etling, Burrow happened, but ‘20 was horribly mismanaged with TJ and Max. Last year was just as floundering with Nuss starting against Arkansas. I just don’t see it. Yeah, Miles set a low bar, but I don’t feel like O aced it or anything. Change my mind?
ETA: I thought Max did a serviceable job, but he didn’t show a ton of development. To me, the modernized offense has a lot to do with the improvement. Again, not being an arse. I’d like to hear what I’m missing.

Geaux BRENNON!!! I have been backing MB every year. He is gonna prove himself the owner of this team.

I'm not trying to defend O, but strictly speaking on the basis of managing that position, he did okay. 2020 sucked. He played Brennan, then Brennan got hurt and he felt like Finley was next up. He give Finley enough rope, then switched to Max.

I wouldn’t attack you if you were defending him, just trying to understand the perspective better. To me, once Burrow left, QB fell apart at the seams. Yeah, he kind of got screwed by Myles getting hurt, but to me that isn’t sufficient management. We had TJ, who was rough as rough gets, and Max who was marginally better at most aspects than TJ. Where I think I lose support for the argument is Max’s 2021 season. He regressed hard, and hiring Peetz proved to help not one bit. So, outside of Burrow who was a generational QB by LSU’s standards, we had Etling who largely developed by Cameron, and a few freshmen QBs that looked like they just finished their HS championship and put on the P&G. He never sought a transfer, and development was as bad as the Miles days to me.
ETA: he also whiffed on a whole lot of solid talent at that spot recruiting. I won’t say we should never have picked up TJ, but by all accounts, I felt like our recruiting was on par with Miles regarding QBs as well.

None of us know what is happening behind closed facility doors. I personally think we will see Jayden or Garrett Nussmeier get the nod for the starting job. I feel terrible Brennan decided to take his name out of the transfer portal because he has potential to do great things I just don't think that will be at LSU or in the SEC.

I personally don’t see Daniels getting the starting job at this time. His passing mechanics are just entirely too rough to see him leading the offense every series. Yes, his legs are lethal, but if that’s all he has, SEC defenses will absolutely eat him up. I feel (in my uninformed opinion) that it’s probably Nuss right now with Myles being right there. Daniels just looked so unpolished in the spring.

This.
I believe Nuss or Daniels will be our starting QB. Some of y’all are stuck in the concept that lsu owes Brennan anything. He’s been here going on year 5 or 6, and has started a total of 3 games.
There’s a reason for this.

Same thing can be said for Daniels. Yes he’s fast but the dude simply isn’t accurate enough to beat SEC defenses. Look at his stats in a very down PAC12 year. They are horrible. All people are is he’s a transfer (Burrow syndrome) and he’s fast (Madden syndrome). If I had to bet I’d put my money on him never throwing a pass at LSU outside of a major injury. He’s definitely 3rd string from what seen of all three.

I agree. I am especially concerned with the touch on his passes. His longest completions in the spring game were almost all comebacks by the receivers, which will translate to a lot of picks in SEC play. He just throws a very soft ball, which gives DBs too much room to make a play. I love Nuss’ zip on his passes. If he can dial it in, he’ll be a freak. Plus, his wheels aren’t shabby in their own right. Daniels just has too far to go to get past Nuss and Brennan. Brennan has the mechanics, and if you don’t think so, rewatch his film. He’s a live arm, just needs protection and a killer instinct.

As he should be. He just transferred from a different offense, with completely different players and coaches. He’s going to be behind. Look I’ve seen horrible mechanics win a national championship before and he’s not as bad as that guy was as for mechanics go.
When you put him in a offense that suits him and he feels comfortable and or confident in, he could be a completely different QB? The same goes for Myles B and Nussmeier so it’ll be up in the air until they see them in their comfort zone.
I like the hell out of Myles B but my issue is with this many years with this team, he should be taking the lead of it, like he owns it. If he’s not doing that then that’s a problem. He might be? Idk I’m just saying by this time, he should be. Much like Burrow, he should be taking the reins and saying this is my offense, try to take it from me.
I know the big thing with him was weight but the last few times I saw him, it wasn’t good weight. So if I was him, I’d be whipping my body into shape with good weight. Getting rid of the fat and shaping that into lean muscle mass. I’d be working with Drew Brees on my pocket movement, quick releases and throwing on the run.
He doesn’t need to be able to run, just be quick enough with his decisions on throwing deep or dumping it off. If he’s got his body in the best shape, he’ll be quick enough to scramble if he needs to do that every so often. But his decision making and pocket awareness has to improve to have a shot. If he does those things, he’ll be our starting QB and win lots of games. He’s got some time to do it but he needs to get on it now!

I don't think it's a question at all. I mean, with Kayshon Boutte openly lobbying for Nuss to be the starter, I can't see how they wouldn't anoint Nuss the starter in the fall.
Of course, they are saying it is a three-way tie because first, competition is always good and second, because they don't want any of them to hit the transfer portal.
Thus, the longer they can keep secret who the eventual starter will be, the better.
Nonetheless, it's pretty obvious that it will inevitably be Nuss.

I'll take that bet. How much do you want to bet? Kayshon Boutte carries a lot of weight on this team and he is not someone Brian Kelly wants to anger before the season. Kayshon says he wants Nussmeier and if Kelly doesn't want to upset the apple cart it better be Nussmeier.
It doesn't really matter because Nussmeier is far more talented that Myles is, in any event. I mean, it's not even close.

Considering how good our receiver corps is going into the season, anointing someone like Jayden the starting job would be criminal.
