Looking for any must does etc. We were planning on belize but I think I made a last minute switch to roatan. Seems a little more kid friendly as far as having nicer beaches, etc.
We will stay in west end. So far we want to do:
West bay beach a couple of times
Little french caye
Punta gorda to dance with the gurafina
Snorkeling
Im planning on prob renting a car just to be able to take some day trips and hit different beaches on the island for snorkeling.
Any other ideas or must eat spots?

I have been to Roatan once as a port on a cruise ship. We spent the day at a resort on West Bay Beach swimming and snorkeling. It was a lot of fun. The beach is nice and the snorkeling was scenic.

There’s a great zip line through the jungle.
I wouldn’t do this. You can get a driver for a day. Also avoid Coxen Hole like the plague. It’s a shithole.
Cal’s Temporary Cantina. What Cal lacks in personality he makes up for in cooking chops. Iron Shore Grill on the beach you’re staying on is fantastic.

And take a water taxi if you want to go from West End to East End. Don’t walk the beach. Don’t call a taxi yourself if you need one. Have the hotel do it. They know the ones that are trusted and won’t rob you!

It sounds like you’re already planning to do this but go to tabyana beach with snorkel gear and swim out to the reef. It’s unbelievably beautiful. Far and away the best snorkeling/diving I’ve ever done. The locals there selling their crap sucks arse but the snorkeling is worth the hassle. Be careful on the reef as waves will knock you around but you can dive down in the ‘canyons’ between them to the white sand below and swim all around between and under the reef and it’s just magical. I’d go back just for that spot.
Pics don’t do it justice but you can see those places you can swim between the reef.

I only snorkeled for one day on Half-Moon Beach, but it was epic. I saw a turtle, squid, stingrays, etc. -- it's like swimming in an aquarium.

Tabyana Beach.

I was thinking of doing one of the intro to diving courses. Do yall think it is worth spending half a day doing that or is the snorkeling good enough?

Looks like they closed down. But from the oics and comments it seemed like a great soot.

I would say it depends on how much time you have. I personally think there’s enough to snorkeling but I do prefer diving. Just a better experience. I would not want to dive the reef off the beach because I liked the freedom free diving gave me to get through narrow spaces. There’s also so spots you might need to crawl over reef that wouldn’t be possible with a heavy tank on your back. But Roatan is one of the premier dive locations in all the world so I wouldn’t pass up learning to dive there. Why not both!

It's a great place to learn to dive and from I gathered the dive shops around the beach you're staying on offer an inexpensive intro to diving as opposed to the diving boats that people stay on offshore.

I have been snorkeling a bunch of times but have never been deep sea diving. Snorkeling is good enough for me.

Very few have. Most divers don't go very deep.

we are headed there saturday for a week. staying in west bay.
we had a cruise ship excursion to tabyana beach a few years back, and loved the whole area. very easy snorkeling right off the beach is convenient.
lots of nice restaurants along that stretch of beach.
I am also interested in other things to do with my kid. maybe hire a driver for a day to show us the island

I agree with this. We paid a driver $100 to drive us around all day anywhere we wanted to go. We went from one end of the island to the other. It may be more now (we were there over 5 years ago), but it's well worth it IMO.

Check out Las Rocas for a place to stay if you don't want to do the big resort thing. It's only a short stroll down the beach from plenty of restaurants and larger resorts.
We rented a little house right next door, but if we go back, we will probably stay at Las Rocas. We ate breakfast there every morning and dinner several nights. Here's a pic of their dock and patio from where we stayed.
We just swam out from the beach and snorkeled everyday using pool noodles for floats because they were cheap and easy to stuff in suitcases.
I would highly recommend getting your driver to drive out to eat at this place.

we are staying at brisas del mar, which had great reviews. Its on west end. I prefer to stay away from the huge crowds. There will be cruise ships there 2 days while we are there so we will do some shite around the island those two days and def not be on west bay.

I just got back from there and stayed at the Mayan Princess in West Bay. I mainly spent the week scuba diving. I recommend the monkey/sloth tour. It is short but a lot of fun with hands on interaction. Also make a reservation for Roatan Oasis restaurant. It was really good. Get some pizza from the Drunken Sailor in West End. The Rusty Fish is a good spot in West End to get some cool recycled metal art.

La Sirena at the tip of the island. They have a coconut treat there that's pretty tasty.
