So, in a lot of these places, you have to type in the amount on the cc reader yourself before putting in your card. I was in Sweden where it is like 10 SEK to 1 USD.
Anyways, I go to type in the amount on the cc reader so it matches the total shown 695,00. So I type in 69500 and am about to press ok and notice the lack of decimals in the amount I typed. Asked the guy, who just looked at me like I was an idiot because I guess I was.
Anyways, a $70 cab ride almost turned into a $7,000 cab ride. I have faith that my cc company would have stopped that transaction but who knows.
International travel is fun. What kind of near frick ups have you done?

I went to france when I was in college with my parents and the last day there my dad asked the hotel front desk the price of a cab ride to the airport so we didn’t have a ton of extra euros, this was 20 years ago so CC’s in cabs wasn’t normal. Hotel told us like 80 euro or something. It was a hotel by the airport so they knew it pretty exact. Cab picks us up and drops us off, and it was like 100 euro, and we only have like 90. My dad apologizes and tells the guy we will go to an ATM to get the rest, frenchie for whatever reason gets pissed immediately and just drives off. We paid him nothing, lol.
The only thing we could figure is he he was ripping us off and thought we were going to report him? So he left?

On a train from Munich to Salzburg in 2012, we bought a multi-person day ticket but passed up the ticket validation hole-punch station without knowing it.
Halfway along on the journey, we see the conductor and a cop bust a freeloading teenager who had no ticket. We’re next, and the conductor and cop walk up to my wife rattling off German assuming she speaks it (she sort of looks the part). I speak a little, she speaks almost none and asks “English?” and hands them our unstamped day-ticket.
At this point, they realize we are tourists who didn’t follow the rules and tell us “You pay us one million dollars!” and laugh it off, giving us a pass on the non-validation.
Fun times reminiscing about those trips

You were lucky. I was on the same Munich-Salzburg route and accidentally did not validate. I think it ended up being a $75 fine for each of us.
I made the same mistake on a subway in Budapest and it cost $22. We were confused because the validation QR on the buses are actually on the bus, but on the subway it was on the wall before we boarded and we were looking for it on the subway instead. The ticket person was waiting on the exit by the Hungarian baths, looking for all of the tourists who had made the same mistake.

I was in front of the São Paulo cathedral standing by the street, and a dude on a bicycle ripped my phone out of my hand.
I chased him for about a minute, and during it an off-duty cop stepped in his way, made him crash the bike, my phone went flying onto the ground, and the kid took off running. I immediately grabbed my phone and some little kid came and took that guys deserted bicycle.

Not monetary, but many years ago, traveling with a too-heavy suitcase....almost misssed train to the airport in Rome bc i was rush hour & the train was mobbed. There was virtually no room, I'm trying to wrestle my case onto the the train and it is caught in the gap. Lucky for me, a big rugby tourney was in town, and several very large rugby fans/obv amateur players standing at the door noticed my problem. As the doors are closing on me, they stepped forward and bodily lifted me & suitcase onto the train, while pushing back the crowd. I was startled, they thought it was hilarious, and we all made it to the airport on time.
Cured me of ever hauling a big case again.
