OT'ers who had an IVP test on kidneys

for kidney function. Why in the hell do the prep instructions have me to take a laxative the night before like a colonoscopy? I had kidney stones a few weeks back and the doc set me up for this test to assess if I have any damage or other effects.
I had something like this when they found the stones - CT scan with contrast and it was done on the spot.
I could not figure out the laxative requirement. Me and stimulent laxatives do not get along...

It’s so the picture isn’t obscured by a colon full of shite.

I was curious what the difference was on the CT Scan w/contrast versus the IVP. Looked pretty similar in description but it only took 10 min.

Are you doing this because of shortage of CT contrast? I forget if IVP contrast is the same and didn't know they still did IVP.

IVP is an intravenous pyelogram. IV dye gets filtered into the collecting system of the kidneys and ureters. X-rays are taken to follow to contrast to looks for obstruction, stones, etc. The test is worthless if you are full of poop. A Noncontrast CT is by far superior to IVP if they are looking for stones but there may be other things they are looking for

I'm scheduled in June for ivp. My issue was some scaring in ureter (from Stent situation) and was narrowing.....put in another Stent and left for a couple months.
Now they are doing IVP to make sure area in ureter healed and isn't narrowing again.
I'm pretty sure I'm good...no issues for 2 months

^^this. CT urogram is another more expensive option than an IVP.

That sounds reasonable. Sometimes a mag 3 scan is done should your IVP be abnormal or equivocal. This is the actual test that confirms the presence or absence of obstruction
