Do ice machines need a filter?

I have one of those stand alone under the cabinet ice makers. This thing keep telling me to change the filter. Is it going to hurt anything if I don't? I'm not scared of drinking unfiltered water so I really don't care about unfiltered ice as long as it wont' cause problems with the machine.

They want $50 for a filter that wants to be replaced twice a year.

They are pretty sensitive to scaling and buildup. The filter should help to minimize some of that as well as clean up the ice.

I added a filter to mine. But I don’t think it’s required. Just need to make sure you clean it often.

It depends on your water. But yeah I know they are absurdly priced. Fridge ones also. Should be $5-10, not $35-50.

I'll say this, I just replaced our fridge water filter that came with the new fridge. It was about 2 years old...I replaced it because it took way too long to fill a cup of water. Now I know I could have just removed it. But the new filter, fills it exponentially faster. So fast, my 3 year old was scared to use it because it kept splashing her.

Point being, in 2 years it got out enough to almost clog the filter so its keeping a lot of stuff from getting into the ice machine. Now, at $50/ pop every 6 months you are talking $100s over the lifespan of the machine. That replaces a lot of parts.

Its basically screwed if you do, screwed if you don't.

get the filter number and search it on ebay

we buy them for $9 on ebay yet if we bought it at stores they cost $25

and yes they will turn into a lump of mildew slime and sludge if you dont change them so if you decide you dont want a filter then connect the lines together if you can, but dont just leave an old filter in it

Just remove old filter and replace with an inline water filter from lowes. Good for 5 years.
