Yep. Worst one I ever got was just like OP describes between thumb and index finger. Bastard wasn't 10 inches long and I would have thrown him back until he shanked me. He was good for a few bites per side when I filleted his arse.
I thought I was going to pass out a few times that night, and my fishing buddy made it a running joke getting injected with "bad catfish drugs".

I was a kid running around the beaches of the Mississippi Gulf Coast in the Waveland area back in the early 60's and stepped on a dead catfish partially buried in the sand.
Bastard got me right in the middle of the sole of my foot and one of my cousins had to pull it out. Hurt like hell and wound up getting a tetanus shot and a couple others for antibiotics just to be on the safe side since the catfish was dead for days.
Took the fun out of running in the sand for years as I was always pre-occupied with looking for dead catfish.
