That area is unique. It’s about to merge into one large metro area, but a lot of people in Austin ignore everything to their south, and a large portion of SA ignores everything to their north. The dividing line is somewhere between San Marcos and New Braunfels.
San Antonio is the 7th largest city in the US, and is about to pass Philadelphia, but it’s metro area isnt much bigger than the city’s population. The Austin metro population is closing fast on San Antonio’s.
Combined they are close to 5M. It makes sense that the Spurs would want to tap into that Austin population boom of transplants.

That's so true and funny. They act like San Antonio is way down in the Valley with Laredo or McAllen. Including people from around San Antonio who settled in Austin.
