Jack Warden

quote:

Warden worked as a nightclub bouncer, tugboat deckhand, and lifeguard, before joining the United States Navy in 1938. He was stationed for three years in China with the Yangtze Patrol.[6]

In 1941, he joined the United States Merchant Marine, but he quickly tired of the long convoy runs, and in 1942, he moved to the United States Army, where he served as a paratrooper in the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, with the 101st Airborne Division in World War II. In 1944, on the eve of the D-Day invasion (in which many of his friends died), Warden, then a staff sergeant, shattered his leg when he landed in a tree during a night-time practice jump in England. He spent almost eight months in the hospital recuperating, during which time he read a Clifford Odets play and decided to become an actor.

Kent Rogers was a young actor who provided voices for Warner Bros cartoons as well as that of Woody Woodpecker.

He can be seen in this movie clip

Rogers was killed in the crash of a training flight at Pensacola, Florida, while he was an Ensign in the United States Navy during World War II, on July 9, 1944, 22 days before his 21st birthday.

Sterling Hayden, OSS. Ran weapons to Yugoslavia and repatriated downed American flyers. Described as "a man utterly without fear" bu a superior.

Christopher Lee, SAS

quote:

During the filming of the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, the action called for the character of Saruman, the wizard famously played by Lee, to be stabbed in the back. The director, Peter Jackson, wanted Lee to scream out, but the legendary actor told him that when people are wounded in such a way, they are unable to scream. ‘Peter,’ said Lee, in his magnificently rich, authoritative voice. ‘Have you ever heard the sound a man makes when he’s stabbed in the back ‘Well, I have,’ Lee continued, ‘and I know what to do.’

One of my favorite actor war stories involves Richard Todd.

quote:

On 6 June 1944, as a lieutenant, he participated in Operation Tonga during the D-Day landings. He was among the first British soldiers to land in Normandy as part of Operation Overlord, and the first Irishman. His battalion parachuted in after glider-borne forces had landed to capture the Pegasus Bridge near Caen. During the operation he met John Howard on the bridge and was involved in helping to repulse counter-attacks by the Wehrmacht forces in the area. Todd later played Howard in the film The Longest Day, recreating these events.
Todd had in fact been offered the opportunity to portray himself in the film, thus publicizing his own real-life heroism, but turned it down because the part was too small.

Paul Newman

quote:

As a radioman-gunner, his unit was assigned to the aircraft carrier Bunker Hill along with other replacements shortly before the Battle of Okinawa in the spring of 1945. The pilot of his aircraft had an earache and was grounded as was his crew, including Newman. The rest of their squadron flew to the Bunker Hill. Days later, a kamikaze attack on the vessel killed several hundred crewmen and airmen, including other members of his unit.

Neville Brand

quote:

Brand was awarded the Silver Star, the third-highest decoration for valor in the U.S. military, for gallantry in combat. In a 1966 interview Brand explained the Silver Star, stating that withering fire from German machine guns in a hunting lodge kept him and his unit pinned down. "I must have flipped my lid," he said. "I decided to go into that lodge."
