Better than Jenkins

I wasn't a fan of what we paid Jenkins in his 2nd tour. Mathieu is much better than him.

I liked the addition. Didn’t like how much it cost us. Jenkins really raked us over just so CSP could right a past wrong. Plus CSP had such a hard on for Jenkins ever since he left.

Having said that, he had a rough go of it in 2020 until the halfway point of the season. After that, he cleaned his shite up and played well until he retired. He did a lot of things for us. Covered TE’s well outside of Waller, blitzed effectively, solid communicator in the back end. He just didn’t make many splash plays, which Mathieu will, which is why I don’t mind the contract. We’re basically getting a younger Jenkins, who can do everything he did, but also change a game with a forced fumble or an INT. As good as Jenkins was, and the defense as a whole, he never really gave us that. It’s a missing component of our already top 10 defense.

We were outside the top 10 in forced turnovers in 2021. It’s not a sustainable stat by any means, but adding a player that caused 6 turnovers last year in a down year vs. someone who had two (Jenkins had 1 pick and 1 forced fumble) is something I can get behind. The addition of Mathieu, and a healthy year from Cam, Payton Turner and Davenport, with some sack-fumbles tossed in, should help us break through the top 10 in turnovers and give our offense some breathing room, esp if we miss out on Kamara for 6-8 games.

The only thing that matters is production for the money. These moves at safety make sense from that perspective. Losing Jenkins was happening either way, so let’s assume Maye was coming even if we resigned MW.

We are slightly less capable, but way cheaper overall and deeper. Still a top secondary in the league. Now we just need a succession plan for TM7. Maybe that’s Taylor.
