I believe what chaps people's arse is that you can shoot someone and get cashless bail. If the irs "suspects" you of something they can sieze your working capital, cost you uptold 1000s in legal fees, and in the end just say whoops my bad and give you back your money....but your business is toast.

So I guess if they can do this to a citizen, they have NO QUALMS about illegally seizing assets of a citizen of another country....unless they are illegal, then we give them a free phone, lunch, some nappies, and a free flight to anywhere they want in the US, its just how we roll.

Maybe that should be the tact for these oligarchs, they should claim asylum in the US

Seizing assets of Russian oligarchs in this situation has nothing whatsoever to do with ordinary civil or criminal asset forfeiture. Those things are terrible, but not at play here in any way. The legal authority to do so is not related.

Conflating them or trying to extrapolate the principle behind the two circumstances is a fools errand.
