Wife brought it up out of the blue because she saw a good flight.

I knew it was in the same area as Aruba and Curacao, didn't know much else about it. Doesn't look all that exciting to me, but I'd love to learn more.

(Neither of us have ever done Scuba or been certified)

If you don't dive, no real reason to go to Bonaire.

Very clean and safe island, but it's more desert island than tropical. Not the prettiest place.

We were there in December. The wife was pregnant so she couldn't dive and I spent most of my time with her. There isn't much going on. We were pretty bored. Not many beaches and they aren't very impressive.

If you want to learn to dive, it might be worth going. But there are other places like Roatan and Utila that may be better options for that.

I dove Curacao. Beautiful place.

Bonaire is bucket list trip. Where did you see good flights? United flies in and out from houston on saturdays last I checked. I heard it's safe but petty theft is out of control, they will take anything not bolted down.

I've been once and am currently planning second family trip.

We all dive, so it is the perfect place for us. Easiest place to start diving -- zero current, incredible water clarity and very healthy reefs and fish populations.

You can do your online coursework at home and then take skills test at the dive center.

As far as Bonaire as a "vacation destination" -- you'd probably be disappointed. It is growing a bit with that regard, due to it becoming a stop-over for a couple of cruise ships. But beaches are not fantastic.

As far as diving goes though, it is truly a great place to start.
