I haven’t followed extremely closely, but the testimony and evidence I’ve seen indicates that they were abusive to each other. I don’t have a rooting interest one way or the other in this matter, but from a legal perspective, Depp has a difficult case to win here.
this is about showing men have little to no voice when they're the 1s being abused in a relationship... and Depp is the 1st to try and fight that "woman is the delicate flower and can't be abusive... only men are abusive in relationships" stigma publicly

Despite the mythology of the classic abuse victim being an innocent and/or naive woman. And the classic abuser being a misogynistic man? In most cases of domestic violence there is two way violence. Especially if you categorize force used defensively as violence.
But as a rule violence committed by women against men is disregarded even when the woman is the primary instigator and person controlling the persistence of physical and emotional abuse.
If it were a woman in Depp's position she simply wouldn't be in Depp's position. Amber would be in jail as a pariah for putting out a cigarette on him, mutilating him, and gaslighting him. Her statement to him that no one would believe him because he was the man was extremely interesting because it showed her control of her power over him.
Anyway, it seems ironic that her shitting in his bed is probably what changed the public narrative in spite of considerable physical aggression. Because of how disgusting her behavior was? It removed some of her protective female halo.. something that her overt violence and premeditated malice didn't destroy. Generally we just don't hold violent and malicious women responsible for their actions in the same way we do men. But she fricked up by shitting the bed. You lose the effective pretense of female victim hood when you act like a deranged hobo.
