And in Griff's case no GM has ever had a better set up for success starting a rebuild.

If this team is a consistent contender, wins a chip, and Griff achieves his stated goal of creating a Spurs like decade of contending, it wont matter that he fricked up trading down, that the Zion situation was rocky, or he hired SVG and spent draft capital on misfit parts his first years. You might ding him in comparing him to his peers, but there will be no doubt he will have earned the right to put his name amongst the greats if he achieves that.
