I was a young kid during this era so I may not be remembering correctly, but didn’t Arnsparger play Mickey Guidry one series a half when Tommy Hodson was a freshman and sophomore?

Did you ask Bert about this? He was NFL MVP in 1976. Why would this guy only play half of every game in college

I worked for Bert when I was a lot younger. Bert said they played two QB’s because his coach liked to create experienced depth in case the starter got injured. And no he didn’t have a problem with it. Back in those days the rules did not protect the QB.

Are you sure?
Rumors were that he resented it for several years. Eventually he forgave him for the good of LSU.

Bert Jones was always class. I think his Dad and Grand dad all graduated from LSU.

It wasn’t something we talked about until I was maybe 21. You need to be the starter to win the Heisman so naturally I’m sure Bert wanted to start. Competitive people have egos. Keep in mind Freshman did not play in that era. Having said that QB’s routinely got hit 3 seconds after they threw the ball in that era so experienced depth was in play. Coach McClendon was trying to open the offense up some. However, Bert said he threw 3 interceptions against I believe Colorado in Tiger Stadium. Paul Lyons responded by leading an offensive explosion. He set an LSU single game record for total offense, gaining 304 yards on the road against Wisconsin. LSU scored 37 against A&M, 38 versus Wisconsin, 38 again against Rice, and 48 on Florida. Also LSU had this RB named Art Cantrelle who rushed for more yards than any other RB in LSU history not named Billy Cannon. Supposedly he was the meanest LSU player the Tigers ever had. Bert said even the cops were scared of him. Anyway, Bert said he started around 2 games in junior year, got plenty of playing time, and started his senior year. Bert said he developed into a better QB his senior year and fully developed as he grew into manhood and filled out in the NFL. Had there been todays modern medicine when Bert got hurt he would probably be remembered as one of that eras all time NFL greats at QB.

I think he left LSU for Tulane because of the WWII USN Program.

You have a pretty good memory. Yes, Arnsparger would spell Hodson here-n-there with Guidry.

We did similar with Andrew Hatch and Jarrett Lee in '08.

Not a fan of 2 QB systems. Do like to have packages which takes advantage of a change of pace, e.g., wildcat

Cholly Mac punted on 3rd down just in case something went wrong he had another down to punt. Punting on third down, two quarterbacks and not winning the big games. I hope we don’t go back to those day. ( I know he won more games or that’s what his supporters said)

Good teams with strong defenses did this regularly in that era. Paul Dietzel was a proponent as was Johnny Vaught at Ole Miss. I don't believe this was muchin vogue by the time Mac became head coach.

Mac lost his starting QBs Pat Screen and Nelson Stokely in the 1964 to 1966 years which derailed promising seasons and led him to begin to play two QBs regularly.
