This doesn't have anything to do with the Castle Doctrine. According to the article, the victim was hiding behind another car and claims that the perp still had the gun pointed at him. That's when the victim shot the perp in the neck and ran inside his house.

I think the fact that there were two of them helps his i.e., even though he was hiding behind the car having a fear that one of the assailants could flank him.

You’re right if that’s the facts. I initially read the blurb but not the article.

I still sand by, if that’s the facts, Williams ain’t charging this guy with anything.
