The fact there are many many many Catholics who live thinking they can get to heaven if they are “good enough” is a testament to that

Fair enough, but I think the distinction needs to be made insomuch as this is not official church teaching. Yes, proper catechesis is the responsibility of the church, but it continues to baffle me when I hear ex-Catholics blame the church for their breathtaking ignorance. Instructors are not responsible for when kids go wool-gathering instead of paying attention in class. The worst are these fundamentalist types who "got saved" and now feel obligated to justify their "decision for Jeeeeeezuz" by running down the faith of their fathers with trash arguments (like the idea that they were taught a "works salvation.")

Official church teachings mean nothing if they’re distorted by the time they reach the people

You just said it yourself: Baptists, Fundamentalists, and Presbyterians have the issue of many of their people believing all they have to do is choose salvation or be chosen for it once and their lifestyle doesn’t matter because “once saved always saved” has been taught instead of “perseverance of the saints”
