Does anyone have one of the new "smart" indoor trainers for cycling? Care to comment?

I still have my old Tacx Flow that I purchased in 2012, but its just basically a 6 lb. flywheel and a stand. It also tops out at <750 watts max. The new "smart" trainers offer a lot more features and gamification, but at a significantly higher price point. I think I paid $250 for my old Tacx Flow, and the new ones I'm looking at are $700-$1.5k.

I'll visit Contender Bicycles this weekend to see what/if I can demo and get some recs if I can, but if you have any feedback I'd appreciate it. What I'm looking at based on nothing but internet videos and reviews:

- Wahoo KICKR
- Tacx NEO
- Tacx Flux
- Elite Suito
- Elite Direto

I've been using a Kickr 3-4 times a week for the last 2+ years. I use it with Zwift. Never given me any problems. When it dies I'll get another one.

I got an Elite Direto when they were on sale for a few hundred off. Works great. Every now and then it'll give me connection trouble on starting up zwift but other than that it's been excellent.

Thanks. It seems like to gold standard based on what I've read. How do you like Zwift? Wahoo has their own SYSTM offering that is the same $15 monthly cost as Zwift. I'm just curious why you didn't use SYSTM since it would be native with the Kickr. Thanks again.

Thanks. I read about one of the Tacx or Elite units that had this issue fairly frequently. The recommended fix was to shut-down all your other bluetooth stuff.

Other than the connectivity I assume you like Zwift as well?

If you really want to get fit (assuming you have limited time) a smart trainer is required. I do interval work with trainerroad and zwift for racing. I think my ftp when I first started using the trainer was around 240 putting me at 3.8 w/kg. Now I’m at 4.45 w/kg using both.

I have unlimited time. I've done this all this before, just not with a smart trainer. From '04 to '13 I competed in races and also did weekly summer crits in SLC and Boise. The last four years as a CAT5 & CAT4. I originally had rollers, then I purchased the Tacx Flow I mentioned. Then I lost interest in cycling and began trail running, so I'm still in good shape just not like I was when cycling. Now I'm starting to go on rides again.

You can do intervals, sprints, hill repeats, etc.. on my 2012 Tacx Flow, but none of it is gamified and interactive. I used to do my winter training with a set-of DVD's and a 27" TV. So, I'm just looking to upgrade the tech I have and the gamification aspect I'd really like to have. Also noted that you are the third person that uses Zwift in this thread. I'll take that as a positive recommendation.

Zwift works as intended for me. It's a tool. I use it for intervals 95% of the time and will do a race if I can't bring myself to do regular 'ol intervals. I'm not familiar with SYSTM but considering how I use Zwift, it would probably suffice as well.

I have been using a second generation Wahoo Kickr since 2017 with little to no issues. The 2018 version had issues but I believe Wahoo has sorted those problems out with the current generation of Kickrs.

I pair my Kickr with Zwift running on an ATV 4k. I honestly have experienced only a single power dropout in 3+ years.

Most of my riding is/has been group rides and structured work outs. I am just now beginning to drip my toes into racing with the Thursday WTRL Team TTs with DIRTy Wattz.

In the past Wahoo has offered deals with refurbished units. Look into a refurbished unit if you are trying to keep costs to a minimum.

Been using a Cyclops Hammer for three winters now. Rock solid, awesome for interval workouts with no fluctuations. A little noisy, but I’ve heard the third generation is much quieter. A little less expensive than the Kickr.

Anyone used the kickr rollr? It looks like a better option for me since I hate having to bust the bike down to mount it and really prefer outdoor riding. I’m scared from the old dual rollers but this looks like a solid option.

I saw one setup at a race at the wahoo tent recently. Looks cool but read some reviews. Can’t remember exactly what the complaints were, but there were some

Not that anyone cares but I purchased the Wahoo Kickr.

I have Campy Record components on my bike so I was going to purchase the Tacx set-up because Campy is supported out of the box, but Wahoo has a new spacer insert for Campy components.

Excellent choice. You're going to enjoy it. You decide if you're gonna ride Zwift with it?

Another Wahoo Kickr and Zwift user here although I’ve been riding more FulGaz over the last 2 weeks. FulGaz is buggy but kind of neat riding real routes. I understand Rouvy is similar so I may try it soon.
