They only people who deserve to be called Doctor outside of a classroom are MD.

You can get a fricking PhD in exercise science or library studies, that doesn't make you special.

These are the same people who if they got their JD would use the term Esquire.

Why is that? None of them need be referred in such settings except in their work.

I love the obsession some have with medial doctors being the real “doctors”. They are all degree titles. Period.

By definition, a PhD makes you special because you had to contribute a novel idea or fill a gap in knowledge. Medical degrees are nothing more than professional training.

The American English colloquial usage of doctor for physicians is what has created this pissing contest.
