This incredible run of being a top 5 program every year, competing for and winning National championships.... this awesome time to be a Tiger.

It's not a golden age, it's the way it just ought to be.

Outside of Joe Dean and shite-for-brains hires and lack of focus on football as a premium program, LSU football is where it can always be.

I'm glad this shite got straightened out in my 30's, (thank you Dinardo, Emmert, Skip, Saban and Miles) cause it was bullshite that we crashed so hard and I couldn't take that anymore.

Now go enjoy the shite-kicking of mighty Florida!

golden age implies a beginning and an end. I agree.

No team stays on top. See Miami, Nebraska, Fla St.

it's a different world now. you will always see a few teams like us in the top ten year in and year out with only a couple cinderellas every now and then (mizzou). the gaps are getting too wide between the haves and have nots.

Yes, LSU has been a top program for at least a hundred years. They were great when my dad attended LSU in the mid-30s; great during my undergraduate years in the late 50s and early 60s; great in my graduate school years of late 60s and early 70s, but the current run of the 21st century has to be the all time best!

I absolutely love where we've been in terms of the quality of our team since around 2001. Of course, I'm not old enough to have experienced LSU football in the 80s/90s and earlier years.

Although recruiting has been stellar, I'm not sure we can stay a Top 5 team for years on end. It's just hard to do. Look at Miami and Florida State. The were essentially where we were 8 years ago - on top of the college football world. Now, they're bottom feeders in the ACC, and neither has been ranked consistently for a while.

I'm hoping Miles knows the secret to avoid that kind of scenario.

There's only 1 secret, bro and that is "focus".

LSU will stay on Top until we get complacent.

And by we, I mean, fans, administration, politicos, etc.

When these three start to think excellence is a given and we can set it on "cruise control" and think we'll keep at the top, that's when the fall starts.

Wow ... Do you watch college football? There have never been so many small teams challenging power programs. Ever since they put restrictions on scholarships it's been becoming a more level playing field.

Put your down your Obama sign and turn on ESPN once and a while. This ain't economics.

It's hard to define a "golden age" while the era you're referring to is still going on. But, if we all of sudden became an 8-4 program every year after this decade is over, 2001-2010 would be the "golden age" of LSU football, without a doubt, up to that point.

Skip Bertman, like it or not, has to be given immense credit for this. The hiring of Les Miles was extremely important, Skip realized Miles was the guy to continue the success we enjoyed under Nick Saban.

Biggest difference between the latest incarnation of the Tigahs and the 70's and 80's version, is that we expect to win the big games now. I was a kid in the 70's, but I remember we didn't expect a victory against top 15 teams. Right now we expect to be dominant. The former tigers would hope to be in the final top twenty (back then it was only twenty) now we expect to be top ten, really top five.

I HATE this type of attitude.

This absolutely is the golden age of LSU football. I hope our fan base as a whole never gets to the point where unless we win a BCS bowl or national championship, the entire year was a failure. Be grateful for where the program is and what has been accomplished in the last decade.

The team believes, because Miles instills confidence. Miles is a great recruiter, alone in a state that produces talent. Talent that used to go to Miami, Fla St, Mich, Colo, etc. Now Miles is pulling those out of state players that other top programs bring in. Another plus is that Miles is a good judge of coaching assistants. Thanks to what Saban started, with a boost from Dinardo's La recruits, and now Les Miles, we should be competitive as a top 5 for a long time. I'm so proud to be an LSU Tiger in Tennessee. When people see my LSU gear, it usually starts a conversation that reveals their respect for our program. Especially UT fans who are coming unglued. I just smile.

I agree that expectations are really high right now, but there are some years (2006 and 2007) when anything less than a BCS bowl is a poor season. I don't think this is one of those years.

Did someone in this thread say they weren't?? Being grateful for the past has nothing to do with expectations for the future.

Ditto that. UT fans as a whole seem to have a great deal of respect for LSU. Of course, we have owned them over the last few years and they date the beginning of Fulmer's decline to us beating them down in that '01 SECCG.

If we have a coach that can "coach 'em up" and keep the Louisiana recruits we can always be good since we are the only Major football program in the state.

I've said that as well. UT was on a role, having won the NC in 98, and were poised to beat us and play in the NC game. Since UT relies so much on national recruiting, it would have boosted their recruiting big time. I've told numerous UT friends that I considered that payback for '59, when UT ended our backtoback NC dreams.

All things come in fads, cycles, streaks, out of nowhere, etc.

Football, to me, is part of pop culture, which relies on change.

It will be very, very interesting to see what happens to this fanbase when we do cycle down/others cycle up. When we have that 6-6 season, will we be as strong as a fanbase? Will the bandwaggoners jump off?

Since TD.com of 2003:

LSU's record is 60-10

It's no wonder this website is enormously popular.

Time will tell. We should be a 10 win plus team over the next three years, though.

Look at these three schools though:

Miami - Horrible fanbase with two other major schools in state. All this, coupled with a terrible conference = not appealing to many non Miami recruits.

Nebraska - Terrible state for producing talent. Great tradition, but a tradition that was made by mostly Texas players. Their downfall was predictable due to their lack of talent in state.

FSU - Legend at coach has slowed them down. They recruit well, but the fact that they can't let go of the past has slowed them down, along with poor coordinators.

LSU may fall back to being an 8-4 team in a few years, but there will be plenty of 10 win seasons in between. We have too talent rich a state (in which we're the only major school), too much tradition, too much appeal to high caliber coaches to fall into major obscurity.

College football does go in cycles, but teams like LSU, UT, USC, OSU, etc will always be a threat to win 10 games for the above mentioned reasons.
