It is also possible that a country would feel threatened by an adversary flying nuclear capable bombers 12mi from its borders during NATO exercises. Would a sane person consider nuclear bombers a defensive weapon? Yet there they are, airborne within eyesight of Russia during a NATO military exercise.
That situation is not new, and has existed at least since the 1950’s and definitely since 2004. Russia shares a maritime border with Alaska and Turkey, and the Baltic states plus Poland have been in NATO for two decades. Russia’s Arctic coast has always had these concerns.
Russia wants Ukraine to be pro-Moscow but don’t pretend like it’s about the abstract possibility of NATO aircraft coming near Russia. They do that constantly around Russia’s borders in the Baltic and the Arctic already and have for decades. Russia does the same thing to Europe and the United States.

Naw, dude.
Russia is legitimately afraid that a NATO country will nuke Russia, unprovoked. Totally legit and/or rational fear.

quote:Of course it's new. Russians flying bombers up and down the US west coast would entail about a 24hr flight time. NATO bombers in Kiev doing the same might not take 24 minutes. Don't be obtuse.
