The problem is that the weight given to the "the history of the region prior to said invasion" by the "kind of/sort of pro-Russian" folks on this board is far too much, just like the alleged justifications are given far too much respect.

It would be like trying to defend a schizophrenic person who killed another b/c the killer saw the victim as a rabid unicorn. I mean that's a justification, and we can't ignore how the killer perceived the situation, right?

No.

It would be like knowing that schizophrenic person would kill his girlfriend if he caught her dating you. He's made that known to you many times. You don't particularly like the girl, but you take her on a date ... just to see what'll happen. She gets killed. When her parents accuse you of provocation, you shrug and say, meh, too bad, so sad, but I had every right to ask her out.
