I watched a few eps past Negan killing the asian kid but stopped after that and never once cared to go back
Yep, that was the episode that jumped the shark. They just spent seasons losing their innocence in the world with the farm and governor. All those hard lessons had to be forgotten because the authors needed them to be stupid enough to walk into that trap where Negan could monolog and brain Glenn and Abraham with Lucille. Then after they get away, they spent seasons where Negan was suppose to intimidate Rick into submission. Rick is the person that killed another man by biting him and ripping his jugular vain out in front of his followers. Yep, some dude was a baseball bat wrapped in a little barbed wire is going to intimidate that dude.
Every episode with Negan was a monolog and then he guts some minor character. Mind you, many times he was by himself in Alexandria. They just all stood around and took it because of "hostages." Rick by his natural progression should have put a bullet between dude's eyes and attacked their compound where the hostages were being held immediately.

Seems like they spent a lot of time building up the Negan story arc before even introducing him…then they dragged the storyline out way too long. Even the way they “ended” it was less than satisfying. You wanted to see Negan’s brains festooning that barbed-wire bat.

Glen died in the books. We suspected that coming.
Though also in the books Karl and Sophia make it to the end. So there's that.
