Pretty sure Ukraine has all but stopped launching their expensive air defense missiles at Shahed drones and the like. The good thing is that they fly so low and slow and have a long distance to cover from their launch sites to get anywhere in the interior of Ukraine like Kyiv that AA defense teams have time to prepare and get into position to hopefully intercept. While Patriots, IRIS-T and NASAMS get (and rightfully so) a lot of the attention, the unsung heroes of Ukrainian air defense against the hoards of cheap drones being sent at civilian areas are hundreds of small 2-3 man teams with old Soviet DShK

I've seen several articles where the Ukrainians are claiming the Gepard is the most effective and far cheaper option at shooting down drones( opposed to expensive missiles) . But Germany has limited production capacity for making the ammo & the Swiss( who also make the ammo ) wont allow any of their ammo to be shipped to Ukraine.

Ukraine seems to love the Gepards.

The Swiss Parliament may be on its way to easing that, but the moving 5-year window would still significantly limit Swiss weapons making it to Ukraine.

quote:

Countries like Spain, Denmark, and Germany have been asking Switzerland to allow to export armaments to Ukraine for over a year now, but the Swiss government has been firm in its decision to respect the Swiss War Materiel Act.

This act makes it impossible to re-export Swiss-made war materiel to countries involved in a conflict.

But on Thursday the Security Policy Committee passed two motions to ease the rules on the re-export of Swiss armaments. The motions were approved in the Senate committee by eight votes to five.

One of the motions seeks to lift some restrictions on the export of war materiel “in exceptional circumstances and if required to ensure national security”, said the committee in a statement.

The second could also allow deliveries to countries “that are committed to our values and have similar export controls to Switzerland”.

Buyers could re-export Swiss armaments after five years, under certain conditions. Re-exports to countries that “severely” violate human rights or pose a risk to the civilian population would be banned. This would allow the re-export of Swiss-made weapons to Ukraine, but not to Russia.

The Gepard is the obvious best answer to the Shaheds and other drones but there are only about 40 of them in Ukraine so you can’t cover much ground with that. They really need another 100 of them but as you said, ammo is a problem. They are hungry beasts too that can go through a lot of ammunition very fast. Crews on them already are having to fire in short bursts to conserve ammo. Ukraine can have thousands of men with a machine gun and searchlight rigged to a truck with plenty of ammunition though. Sometimes the best solution is the most primitive. The Ukrainians have shown an incredible ability to work with that they have and maximize it’s effectiveness.
