Gaming Apps and spending money

I have been playing an app (Evony) for about 6-7 months. I have recently reached a level that will take tons of time and resources to move forward.
Only thing is they are unrealistic. The game may not even being played by the time the ticker runs out.
Anyone know how the whole spending things work and if it worth it.
I play when in the airport, bored or driving (I kid!)
Thanks

I got sucked in for a while with a mobile game and would throw a couple dollars at it weekly but then realized I have nothing tangible at the end.

Worth depends on what you personally get out of it. 99% of mobile games will hit you with an unreasonable pay wall at some point. And like you said, most games die within a few years. I play them for free up until that pay wall, and move on personally. Mobile gaming has some great ideas for some games, but they ask for absurd amounts to "fully enjoy". You can, quite literally, spend thousands of dollars to reach the top of leaderboards in some games. That's the price of "free".
I hate the model....I'd much rather just pay $40 or whatever dollars and just have access to the damn game. But I'm assuming some devs/companies make quite a fortune with that model, using gacha mechanics and exciting your brains reward system when you obtain an in game asset that you had to pay for. Lots of games use "summons" or something to that effect to obtain different tier assets (with high tier assets having an absurdly low % chance of obtaining). So then you pay another $20 to be able to try again. Maybe you get lucky and don't have to spend much, but that's doubtful. It's mechanically no different than gambling a large amount of the time. And just as exploitative/addictive.

As long as it's in healthy doses, whatever it's your free time. The problem is, these games hit the same part of your brain that gambling does.

Pay $60 for a PC game get 20 hours playtime out of it. Spend $60 on a mobile game that you get 100 hours playtime out of?

They set it up like that on purpose.
Make you sink the money in once you get hooked.
I had a guy that used to work for me that made about $20 working nightshift at a warehouse spend $100 every pay period (2 weeks) on a Bobs Burgers card game that was on the App Store.
Every pay night at 4 AM he would come in and show me his neeest best cards he got. Crazy shite.

You will spend much more than $60 on "freemium" games, if you're trying to stay competitive in a game. Trust me. Obviously depends on the type of game - but most mobile games are all about monthly sales, weekly sales, daily sales, one time account starter sales, monthly membership plans, in game currency....the list goes on. Micro Transactions everywhere. It's a lot of pay to win. $60 for a console/pc game is much, much more worth it.

Eh it depends on your goals, if you want to compete for the tops on a server they yes. But if you realize that when you spend money there is just another carrot on another stick and take your time guess what happens, you spend less money and get more time out of the game. I usually play when I am waking up in the moring or whating at the hospital for a family member (happens more than I like.)
