Ukrainian great grandmother, Valentina Constantinovska, on an Ak-47, training to defend against a possible Russian attack. “Your mother would do it too,” she told me.

Very poor trigger etiquette.

It's a grandmaw.
What do you expect?
Nice weapon though. I would like our government to pass them out to us.

No way a "Ukrainian Granny Brigade" is a thing.
Bad Propaganda.

Depending? Not really. Ukraine has over 200,000 soldiers.
Ever read about Eastern European women during the world wars? You’d be a fool not to give them all a rifle as part of a national defense plan.

The current size of Ukraine's armed forces, which consists of 250,000 (215,000 military personnel), is the largest in Europe, and second in the region after the Russian Armed Forces. In 2022, President Zelensky ordered to increase the size of the forces by 100,000 by 2025, while ending conscription in 2024.
Regular troops (not counting grandmothers).
It this conflict ignites, it will be a bloody mess.

You gotta understand the Russian culture. The Russian soldiers will always be afraid of a "Bobooshka" Russian Grandmother. They are mean and fearless. They step in between fighting men without any fear. They are used to it because their men are drunkards and they have to handle up on business.

A bit off topic, but what pisses me off about that pic is thinking that one of our advantages over the Taliban was that they had old guns/equip the Russians left them. Now they aren't as backwoods....thanks Biden...you did that.

That 7.62 bakelite mag cost a pretty penny over here. Looks like a Type 3 AK47 with polish handguard from the pattern or just a really worn down Russian orange and it's full auto.
One thing for certain is if Ukraine repels the invasion by some miracle, they can recoup some cost by cutting up the old AKs and selling as parts kit here. And that bakelite magazine.

Given that type three is mid to late 50s built gun, I totally agree. They cleaning out the arsenal and outfitting everything and everyone.

Meet the Night Witches, the Daring Female Pilots Who Bombed Nazis By Night
quote:
The Germans nicknamed them the Nachthexen, or “night witches,” because the whooshing noise their wooden planes made resembled that of a sweeping broom. “This sound was the only warning the Germans had. The planes were too small to show up on radar… [or] on infrared locators,” said Steve Prowse, author of the screenplay The Night Witches, a nonfiction account of the little-known female squadron. “They never used radios, so radio locators couldn’t pick them up either. They were basically ghosts.”
quote:
Using female bombardiers wasn’t a first choice. While women had been previously barred from combat, the pressure of an encroaching enemy gave Soviet leaders a reason to rethink the policy. Adolf Hitler had launched Operation Barbarossa, his massive invasion of the Soviet Union, in June 1941. By the fall the Germans were pressing on Moscow, Leningrad was under siege and the Red Army was struggling. The Soviets were desperate.
