1984. I found myself at a urinal next to Teddy Kennedy and my Dad never forgave me for not pissing on his shoes. Saw Reagan’s motorcade. Hung out with Henson Moore and J Bennet Johnson. I met Strom Thurmond and he told me he loved Louisiana and some story about his mother. Politics during the day and unbridled ribaldry with a girl named Glori from Puerto Rico at night. Good times.

The Presidential Classroom is a high school program in which students spend a week in Washington, D.C., at the Georgetown Marriott Conference Center at Georgetown University. During each one-week visit, students tour different sites in DC, including the State Department, the Capitol, the Supreme Court, Mount Vernon, Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial, World War II Memorial, and various advocacy organizations, such as the NRA, RNC, DNC, and ACLU. Students hear from leading political officials and insiders about the Constitution and the current political scene, with a focus on international politics and negotiatioins. The participants were very international, as the programme attracted many exchange students which spent a year at a US high school. While more than half of the participants were non-US citizens, students from the US still were the largest group from a single country. The international students often visit embassies and meet personally with the ambassadors.

More of a mixture between nerds and golden boy/girl types. Lots of people with good hair who ended up in law school and various federal agencies.

I went to the national youth leadership conference in 03. Same type of event. I got to sit in the House, ride the senators train under the capital and tour our nations capital. Most memorable was when we visited the tomb of the unknown soldier. Gave me a totally new respect for everyone who has ever put on a helmet and served. It was also on that trip that I decided I never want to be in politics. I’m not good at compromise. At least that was my verdict from our mock United Nations meeting.

Same at the tomb of the unknown soldier. I always hated the process of politics but loved political philosophy. But PResidential Classroom was all process stuff and speakers- mostly international politics and law , and that is what I studied in college so it was cool. They put us up in the old Shoreham Hotel which was solid back then. My roommates were from San Luis Obispo, San Jose and Concord, Mass.

I think we stayed at the Kellogg dormitory around Chevy chase.

I got invited back my senior year in 05 to bush’s 2nd inauguration. That was a very cool trip as well.

I was there in ‘84 too! Awesome time, snowed while we were there. Talked to Secret Service guys at the White House. Saw where Lincoln was assassinated. Went to capital hill, met with La reps. Great parties at night. It was all so much fun; remember it all very fondly to this day.

I went.
It was only one of three student groups allowed inside the CIA Headquarters, and the week I went was one of the few that went there. I have been inside The Bubble, which is a fairly uncommon experience.
Even more uncommon: I fell asleep during the presentation inside The Bubble.

Pretty neat- the bussed is from the hotel there. We had to bring ID but weren’t allowed cell phones or wallets. We had to leave them in dedicated boxes in the cargo hold of an unoccupied bus that met us at a remote location after we left the CIA. The security there made the place feel pretty special. I had never experienced anything quite like it.

I was also able to nap on the House floor and the Embassy to the Bahamas. Late nights and early mornings.

I also went to Mt Vernon on Washington’s Birthday. I was actually interviewed by a radio show while there, but I was never able to track down if it was published/aired.

It was pretty fun. I don’t keep in touch with my roommates. I’m still friends with a couple of folks I met there on Facebook. I still keep in touch with my Caucus leader and have met up with him a few times later on in life.
