This cracked me up....

Lastly, this post has forced me to take stock of my life: I'm not really sure what it says about me that I just laid here on my bed - Powerbook by my side, munching on some Doritos, with a "Family Matters" re-run playing on the TV in the background - and watched 7 marching bands play the Indiana Jones song so I could critique it on a rival's message board.

Im starting to get sick of this "Southern is the greatest band" crap...they are good at what they do....high stepping and playing as loud and as bad as they can...but by NO means are they the greatst band ever...that dude on the Florida board needs to get a fricken clue...

They copied that directly from Southern University, who is the best band in the world.
FAIL.

Southern's band is HORRIBLE. Everytime I watch them on tv, their horns are way out of tune and there's nothing quite like nails on a chalkboard like an entire horn section being out of tune yet playing as loud as they humanly can.

SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS UUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!

..and when trying to compare apples to oranges, the one saying how great Southern's band is obviously have never seen the FAMU Marching 100.

I like the guy who says that you aren't marching unless your knees go up to your waste. Has he never heard of corps style marching?

Only other two bands I have enjoyed even closely to LSU are Rice's Mob, and A&M's.

I forgot to comment on the Southern fan.
I want to be gentle here, since I actually enjoy watching both Southern and Grambling's bands.
Southern is very good at THEIR particular style of band--historically black college band performance, and we can argue till the cows come home over which style is the best. It's an argument you will never win.
L.S.U. began its life as a military school and I am extraordinarily proud of the fact that we put on a military-style show with military-style precision. I would be embarrassed beyond belief if L.S.U. put on a "Southern" style performance.
How foolish would it look for L.S.U. to do it "Southern" style, and how foolish would it look for Southern to do it "L.S.U." style?
Frankly, I would laugh my arse off if I saw either one.
Let the two bands act in accordance with their character and let that be the end of it.
Many Southern fans get this concept; Others, however, are too stupid.
Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
One last point: None of the forums for the other six schools in this contest really make much of their bands. Frankly, none of them seem to be aware that they have a band.
LSU's excellence in all things extends to the band we put on the field. Aside from Texas A&M, Ohio State and Notre Dame, I'm not aware of any fanbase that gives a rat's arse about their band.

Tigerlord,
You hit the nail on the head. I've been going to Southern U and LSU football games for years and, it never fails that these comparisons between the two bands comes up.
Personally, I think Southern has a great band. I also think LSU has a great band. There was a time when I didn't think LSU was that great but, that was before I actually started going to LSU games.
Both bands do a different style of show. Yea, SU does more of the high stepping and whatnot, and LSU does more of the military style. But, both of their shows I find to be pretty entertaining.
Also, I think the guy on the FLorida board claiming that LSU stole "Neck" from them is delusional. I've been going to HBCU and SEC games for damn near 20 years and there's a million bands that play that song. Here's the evidence.....
SU Neck
FAMU Neck
La Tech Neck
LSU Band Neck
I will say one thing though..............as much as I like the Golden Girls, they still pale in comparison to the Dancin' Dolls
How do they get their hips to move like that?!!

Again, I think its just different styles. There are many who would say, in person, that having more brass sounds better and gets the crowd more excited.
I think it just depends on what you like or what you're used to. But, those Dancin' Dolls looked good in front of 'em though.

Uhhh, we played FAMU Marching 1000 (yes one thousand, cause they have about 1000 members in ther band) for the SWAC vs MEAC challenge in 2007 in Birmingham, Alabama and we will play them in October of this year in Baton Rouge. We blew them out in 07 when they ran out of songs and started repeating. We will also give them the business again this year when they come to Baton Rouge. We have over 100 songs in the song book and no musical note cheat sheets like some schools. (i'm not going to say any names) Southern is the best at what they do! LSU is good as well at what they do! Case closed!

More dumbing down of America. Really how dumb do you have to be thinking southern is the greatest band. Every time I have seen them play and try to march at the same time I just cring.
Just call me TIRED OF THINGS BEING STUFFED DOWN MY THROAT THAT JUST ARE NOT CORRECT. And the agenda for this is is is well I just will not go there

When is that deal in October and where? I'm in the Tiger Band, and I would LOVE to come see that.
