Dog Ear Ablation Surgery: Page 2 Update

Has anyone who posts on the OT had an ear ablation surgery for their dog?
My precious Chihuahua has had a chronic ear infection for 2.5 years. Nothing we or our vet is doing has helped. He had a very big polyp surgically removed 3 weeks ago with his vet and when we went for his followup more are growing already.
We asked about the ear ablation, as a trusted vet friend told us about it and our vet said that is the route to go. So we are now on the wait list for the UT Vet school for a consult.
Questions are, what did you pay? Was it successful to cure the issue (we paid $1000 for the unsuccessful surgery 3 weeks ago). Did your animal have any facial paralysis, and did they recover if so? Did you think the surgery was worth it?
I know hearing loss is a major complaint people have, but he doesn't listen in the first place.

Sounds like it may be time cut your losses. I couldn’t imagine spending more than $1,000 on surgery for a chihuahua with polyps and shite continuing to grow.
Of course, I know this is rough for you but my point stands.

We had a lab with chronic ear infections. The vet mentioned it as a last resort but the infections eventually cleared up. Seems like a pretty drastic measure.

My dog happens to be a big part of our family life, toddler included, and has a perfect bill of health otherwise.

His infections won't clear because the polyps block the medicine. Trust me. We have tried.
I'm ok with drastic, just wanted opinions of others that have done it.

Fancy word for ear mites. My grandpappy would have put 25 cents worth of diesel in his ear and called it a day.

I got nothing on dog ear stuff, but i just wanted to say that i highly recommend pet insurance.. got insurance for my pup after he was already a few yrs old, and had already had one fairly significant surgery.. since then, he’s had to have a few more expensive surgeries, the pet insurance has generally covered about 80-90% of the cost and has paid for itself, and then some .

I had two done on same dog. First time had mild facial paralysis on one side for two weeks. Second ear nothing. Huge increase in quality of life. Cost me $1000ish, each time i think.
She's still here 3 years later. She's learned my made up sign language. No more scratching, constant smell, etc.

Far be it for ME to talk about superannuation, but that barking bat has got to be 12 ish? Think about the expense, don't feel about it. Also, in addition, plus, he can't simultaneously be cool and not ever listen to you.

Definitely getting that on our future pets. I just assumed getting it now it would not be covered because it's preexisting.

No problem. My vet was very up front. He said im probably gonna touch this nerve. It'll cause temporary paralysis. Small chance it's permanent, but I've done a lot.
If I knew this was available years ago instead of fighting drops and rubbing the ear on my floor, I'd have done it then.

Possibly, but mine had already had one expensive surgery to remove cancer before i got the insurance- and it has covered every subsequent cancer surgery.. maybe b/c it was different masses, as opposed to ears, which are obviously the same two ears(?) Might be worth looking into anyway; at the very least, if your pup winds up having other issues as he/she gets older, they’d have a good chance of being covered .
