Make sure your iOS is updated with the latest version.

It is a brick with an illuminated apple logo on the screen, can't get to anything on the phone to see what version it is running.

Did it work?

nope - let it run down, pressed the power button, bot the red dead battery, plug me in logo, plugged up, tried the three button hard reset and went right back to being a brick with an illuminated apple logo on the screen.

Got a new phone, all my data is safe on the new one. Still have some hope of fixing it to trade in or pass down to one of the kids, doesn't look good.

Try plugging the phone into a computer and put the device in recovery mode with volume up, volume down, and holding the side button until the device has turned back on. On a Mac it will alert you to a device in recovery mode. On a PC I believe you need to fire up iTunes. I suspect the device had an issue with an update. Sometimes an update can expose a problem with the software on the device, sometimes it can expose a hardware issue such as liquid damage. You can try the update again from the computer. If that fails you can try to restore it from the computer. I would try updating first to preserve the data on the device. If you have any questions you can find apple support documents for recovery mode. If you need additional assistance you can reach out to AppleCare and they can walk you through the steps or can make you an appointment at an authorized service provider.
