Some friends and I are headed down this weekend, but we don't have tickets. If we don't find any worth buying down there, we're fine heading to a bar and watching the game there while getting hammered.

Any good suggestions?

(I know the concept of something good being in Gainesville is difficult, but we're being optimistic here)

go to the Swamp, pretty decent sports bar across the street from campus

Are these places more like a Walk-On's type of place with places to sit, or more like a tigerland bar? Because I'm definitely not looking for the latter.

The Swamp is good. There is a place right behind it that is pretty good, also. Keep in mind that these places are going to be very crowded, since they are right across the street from the stadium. There are also a few shotgun style bars along the street.

The Swamp is a pretty classy place (not cheap) and has decent food. It should be good if you get a table where you can view the TV. They usually have a big screen tv or 2 outside for the games.

The Swamp sounds like the kind of place I'm looking for, thanks for the advice. Just sounds like I'll need to get there pretty early and be ready for a nice sized check at the end.

The last time I was there in 02, The Swamp was pretty much all Florida fans. The LSU fans took over The Purple Porpoise which is just down the street from the Swamp. I think it changed names a couple of years ago though, so try to find out where the LSU people will be.

check out the salty dog saloon, which is right across the street

and the porpoise is supposed to be cool too

all of this is subject to name changings and closings

you could also check out Mother's, an Irish pub a few blocks east of campus on University Ave. it's not as big as The Swamp, but there are TVs everywhere.

Glad to hear that there are some good options right near the stadium. I don't plan on being in any condition to be driving.

Now that I know some good places to check out, what are some of the places that I need to stay the hell away from?

anything across campus on University Ave. that isn't The Swamp or the Salty Dog should be avoided. other than those two, you're likely to get an experience similar to Tigerland bars, although the clientele might be different for a game.

i'm not sure, but based on the number of drunk girls i've seen being questioned by the police, it's somewhere near the University Ave. and Main St. intersection.
