The DB gave up because the guy he was guarding was open by about 5 yards and the ball was already crossing the goal line. The whistle was blown when a ball going about 60 feet per second was a foot away from the receiver.

Exactly.

Given that the speed of light far exceeds the speed of sound, the player heard the whistle, if he heard it at all, after he saw the TD was unstoppable. The whistle had zero impact on the result of the play.
