The 45 Acp became popular in one of the world wars. In the Phillipines, in the trenches, drug hyped enemy would charge in the trench and the 38 was not stopping them.
The idea of getting hyped up on drugs and charging goes back to the viking days when it was termed

When it comes to stopping power, really there is no good handgun. With any caliber, they will die, eventually, but the idea is to instantly stop the bad guy. Dirty Harry had it right. The 44 magnum will do it. Its just not practical for suburban law officers. Shoot thru carry further bullets are a liability. Defense attorneys hollaring slaughter.
Anybody who really deeply studied the 1986 Florida shootout, if Agent Dove would have hit Platt in the same place with a 44 magnum instead of that 9mm, it would have been over.
