I still use my Amex gold. For groceries, fuel, restaurants (these 3 are the bulk of my spending), and the occasional plane ticket it does well. We use the points for gift cards ($0.01 per point if you shop hard enough) and hotels a couple times a year.
The other small perks like Uber $10/month and Grubhub $10/month just sweeten the pot a bit.
