As a eulogy for the man, it's fantastic, but as a documentary, it's one of the worst I've ever seen.

It's a bunch of clips of people telling stories about how great Madden is. We already know he's great.

It's garbage as a documentary though. Literally learn nothing about the man's life other than he was nice and had a cool bus.

It's not a "hot take."

Where did he grow up? No idea?

Did he play football ever in his life? No idea?

His coaching career was completely glossed over. What led him to become a coach? Who did they beat in the Superbowl? What was the season like leading up to it? What was the final score? Why did he retire?

There was almost nothing at all in the documentary about his 30 year professional relationship with Pat Sumerall. How did he feel when Sumerall retired? Was it difficult adjusting to a new broadcast partner after so many years with Sumerall?

You kind of got the idea that he left CBS for Fox because of the $$$$. What about ABC? Leaving ABC for NBC? None of that is in there.

There's also quite literally no footage from his final broadcast nor is there any commentary as to why he decided to call it quits. Just a line that said he "retired after the 2008 NFL season."

Regarding the video game franchise, that's a whole other story, but how did Madden get involved? What level of involvement did Madden have especially during the game's early days. None of that is in there.

As a series of NFL greats giving touching stories about Madden, it's great, but it's just not a documentary because it doesn't actually document anything.

His health must have been bad
The interviews made it seem like he had died

This is why you don’t see a lot of 30 for 30s about the NFL. They don’t want people to go beyond the superficial because they make their own “A Football Life” circle jerks. They’re not “documentaries.” They’re PR pieces.

I hear what you’re saying. 30 for 30 did the same thing with the Roll Tide/War Eagle 30 for 30. It was devoid of basic information and more of recap of the 2009-2010 Iron Bowls (the 30 for 30 came out in 2011, so there was no need to cover something that recent) with Finebaum’s face plastered on it. Total waste of time.

Edit: A lot of these documentaries have the “authorized biography” syndrome. As Bart Simpson put it:

“Krusty’s autobiography was self-serving with many glaring omissions.”

Maddens downfall as a video game occurred basically at the same time NCAA football got canned.

EA is pretty arse at everything now though. Im sure they'll screw up college football

He left CBS because they lost the NFL. It had nothing to do with money.
