Do we actually know that O was in the way? Or is that just sort of speculating the obvious?
I think he was if you read between the lines.
O talked a lot about simplifying things before the season and that's what the defense was doing, running base defense. They were doing almost no blitzing.
Then Kiffin let O know they were keeping it to simple during the bye week. Shake my head that a man with as many years on the defensive side of the ball had to be told by another coach that he was only running base defense.
After the bye week, O "opened things up". Which probably meant let Daronte do what he wanted to and the defense improved every game after.
What happened this year has all the appearances of O sitting on his first year coordinator trying to keep it simple, then he seemed to let Daronte do what he wanted to after someone clued him into why the defense was performing poorly.

That's purely speculation. You can only go by results on the field and his results were not great against any offenses with pulses. Kiffin ran circles around this dude.

What do you mean “had to be told”?
Just looked at the interview again and O response to Lane was “I know”. Meaning lane didn’t tell
Him the defense he was running. Jones was just keeping it basic. right after that O says he went look at the tape for how they played Bama a few years before when he was at Tennessee. And they used that defense. It seems the narrative that O let jones dictate the D for Bama is probably Not true. That was O going back to the 3-3 with blitzes drawn up by Coyle.
Regardless, Hopefully we can upgrade from Jones with the DC hire.
