Has this ever happened before?

Been lurking for a while, but this is my first post...*dons flame suit*
Has anyone ever heard of a coach being non-renewed/ fired/ whatever the official definition for LSU's decision with Ed O, and then that coach continuing to coach and recruit the remainder of the season?
I have racked my brain on it, Google has been less-than-helpful, and the only names I can come up with were coaches who were retiring - where they announced their retirement at some point mid-to-late-season and finished it out.
I honestly can think of no precedent at any level of football, D3 to NFL, or in any other sport that is comparable to the LSU/ Ed O situation. Can you?
And does it potentially point to him being retained on the new coach's staff in a non-coaching role?

I mean, everyone knew Chizick was gone before it was “official” but no, I don’t remember anyone ever being officially let go and finishing out the season.
To me, it lends credence to the idea that Woody already had his guy ready or at the very least was very confident in it.

Yes. Ty Whittingham, also under Woodward.

I can’t think of another example either. The recruiting part is really odd for me, though I’m not sure how else you could have recruiting covered effectively if you shut the staff out. But they all know they’re gone after aTm, so you hope they are of character such that they put in an honest effort. Certainly having a kid come out and imply a coach spoke negatively of LSU would hurt the coach’s reputation going forward.
Orgeron’s attitude over the past few weeks makes me think that from an off-the-field POV he couldn’t care less. I think he still wants win games, but beyond his own ability to purchase as many double-meat hamburgers he wants for the rest of his life I doubt his genuine desire to do anything positive for LSU. So whether his recruiting pitch is 100% pro-LSU is questionable.

Close to home: Paul Dietzel was hired as Atletic Dircector in 1978 to fire Cholly Mac and to find a replacement. Coach Mac continued to coach 1978 AND 1979 even though he was essentially "a dead man walking". Mac was allowed to coach the team in its bowl game even though Bo Rein had already come aboard.

Well.considering his length of tenure and genuine affection for Coach Mac from many fans, this particular instance was not surprising.

Wonder if he continued to recruit? Idk

Thx. Looking into it, it would appear our old buddy Mark Emmert was involved in that one as well.

So, calling on the collected Trivial Pursuit-level knowledge of this board, in the "Big Money" era of college football, (BCS and later) this has only happened once before - Ty Willingham at Washington, also done by Woodward.
That fact, in and of itself, stands out. Strangely, I haven't seen much talk about the oddity of the move by media types.
