The Utah Attorney General's Crimes Against Statewide Economy task force conducted Operation Holiday Steals, a blitz that resulted in 28 arrests and $12,000 of recovered stolen property. Officers patrolled for retail theft at Home Depot, Nordstrom, Target, Ross, T.J.Maxx, Sierra, HomeGoods, Old Navy and Kohl's.

The Utah Attorney General's Office said out of the 28 arrested, there were two parole fugitives, one parole violation, one narcotics arrest and three felony arrests from an "organized retail theft crew" who were charged with similar crimes in other states.

Imagine living in such a utopia that 28 arrests for thievery can only yield one narcotics arrest, just two folks out of prison, and no felons with guns.

I have worked with some Utah PD and Feds and they don't play up there when it comes to retail crime.

I don't go that often, but about every other visit to Home Dept or Lowes, you can witness someone running to the parking lot with boxes, assume power tools. One was a loaded cart.

$428.57 per person. These were some damned criminal masterminds right here...

The Police seem to know what they are doing here though...

"A statement from Salt Lake police said officers are committed to reducing retail thefts to protect businesses and ensure community safety. The police department said officers will have a "visible presence" in the city's retail districts throughout the holiday season."

Visible presence. Imagine that. Having police officers visibly present can reduce theft, protect businesses and ensure community safety. If only more police departments would give that some consideration....

May have something to do with the fact that the Police Department issued the following statement:

"A statement from Salt Lake police said officers are committed to reducing retail thefts to protect businesses and ensure community safety. The police department said officers will have a "visible presence" in the city's retail districts throughout the holiday season."

The job of the police should be first and foremost to prevent as many crimes as possible and the easiest way to do that is for the police to be present and visible.

Sounds like they are doing exactly what should be done EVERYWHERE! When the criminals know they will face consequences when caught and the police are doing actual police work they might not do the crime.

Seems like it ought to work...is seems so simple. I am sure that the cops spending several hours of every shift hiding in the woods with a radar gun is actually more productive though cause I know they have our best interests in mind....
